Bayonetta: Similarities and Differences
After playing the Beyonetta demo, in my opinion, this is a very good game. In terms of style it reminds me more less of Devil May Cry. For those who haven’t played the DMC or even the God of War series I believe that there is a slight learning curve to this game, so press lightly on the breaks while going round the corners. For those of you who have, you can cruise control top speed around this game.
Here’s some footage from Eurogamer. Explaining more about the game is Ben Walleer from Sega
The tutorial in the demo release last week goes through the basics of the character mechanics but I’m sure just like other games in it’s genre, theirs more combos in store in the full game and also because it’s just a demo. It did already by the looks of things have quite a few button combinations/ combo’s.
As Ben stated in the clip above, Beyonette was directed by Hideki Kamiya, (Kamiya was the entity behind Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe), so clearly Beyonetta takes inspirations from his earlier works with Capcom. The way I see it, like anyone with a special craft, you always seek to improve it, and Beyonetta is shaping up to be one of the results of improvement by Kamiya. So for those who bathing in the light of DMC4 I’d give Beyonetta a chance, because in my opinion this is a great improvement of this genre of game. For me this also begs the question, if improvements like this are being made, if there is a ‘Devil May Cry 5’, what monster of a game would we be in for?
Gameplay wise, it takes things from both DMC and God of War. For example the 2-button system like God Of War, also similar button comparisons like button mashing. From DMC, the Beyonetta’s movement, lock-on/ targeting system and the way the weapons are used (Example the samurai sward spike attack and multiple jab are similar to Dante’s stinger attack). Although Beyonetta moves in a similar way, her attack animations are more swift and easy to cancel with a roll, which could lead to a combo in ‘Witch Time’. (Mode where enemies slow down) Apart from that, her execution moves go way over the boundaries of DMC4.
Overall I can’t wait for Beyonetta to come out and experience what else is in store for our new Heroein. What captures me the most about this game are the creative combo’s, Witch Time (which reminds me of QuickSilver in DMC3) and the execution moves which look absolutely fantastic. I’m also interested as to what else Sega has to offer in terms of her storyline. The only problems I had with the demo were some of the frame rates and the camera occasionally not keeping up. Or when I tried to move the camera with R3 it was very slow. When it comes to larger enemies the animation and dual shock sync very well, but the last battle of the demo, where you fight a one on one battle against another character, (Beyonetta’s main rival), felt a bit disjointed. When attacking at times the dual shock and animations felt way off. These are all things that I’m sure will be fixed before the game comes out early January.
Now here’s the controversial part. Those of you who feel Beyonetta is going to smash GOW3, you clearly have not played a demo or seen this game in acting. So please consider your words carefully when comparing the two. This is like me telling you have respect for your elders. Because after playing the Beyonetta demo it may well be in the running because it adds a fresh presence to the genre. But GOW3 is no JOKE! And Beyonetta it is far from overshadowing the blood trail left by Kratos or the carnage left by DMC’s Dante’s Rebellion (Dante’s Sword).
